“As a first generation German American, I spent my summers in Germany with my Omi. Everyone brought their grocery bags, an “einkaufsbeutel," which were either made of netting or cloth. Any drinks you bought at the market were in glass.  After using, you returned the bottles there for deposit, or a “pfand." The bottles would then be refilled for reuse. It’s just what you did.  I wanted to bring a little piece of that home to PDX."
